Bersih Monument.
Over the decades, things experienced changes, but only changes in imagery, yet only appearance changed, method and procedure are still the same. What people have decided upon, becomes manifestations of what people may have seen that is appeared and available now, there is pretty much less, or no thinking is done along the process. The core idea of the monument seeks to remind the nation of one important fact that, people can always decide their own path, configure their own spaces, engineer their own spaces according to their own goals. Future is not a series of “now” point that one can arrive at, but an opportunity that one can seize hold, and even change!
29th and 30th of August 2015 marked a historical event in Malaysia - Bersih 4.0 calling for country clean, fair politics and anti-corruption. Supported by hundred thousands of Malaysian, the rally expanded its coverage across several main spines in the heart of the city which includes Dataran Merdeka area, Jalan Sultan and so on. In order to put forward such memorable event, of its purpose, intention, objective, an architecture proposal of the monument is conceived to commemorate its meaning in such a way, the core idea of such rally can be addressed in time, be interpreted spatially, architecturally and philosophically.
Rally means gathering, assembly held by people with a common interest, idea to achieve a goal. When it is being expanded to urban spaces, the street, in front of the façade, in between buildings, it is architecture.
Proposed monument is situated at Merdeka Square, flag pole area to redefine the meaning of urban spaces along in complementing the design of existing square, especially the stepped flagpole area. The design is conceived as two massing in different characters, one being a black box of an L shape surrounding the existing stepped area, one being a structure with an opened gesture, filled with an accessible green roof with long roof eave and façade in transformable seating structure. Both blocks distinguish each other by its control, sense of openness, functionality, and they are visually separated by a wall. With an transformable feature and long roof eaves, it is able to roof thousands of people who gather for a common goal, idea sharing; while adjacent black box would provide an enclosure for showering, changing and recharge.
Proposed monument has two significations, first a reflection to the current country political condition and desire to change, second, a transformable feature that reminds all people that future, life is all they can, seize hold, decide upon and change.
In a formal sense, on the left, the building is static. On the right, building feature mechanism.
Access of monument is experiential and existential. Sequential experience of the monument can be started from the black box of controlled, managed spaces, and then to the opened block of creative, public, ever-changing. Black box is configured around an existing stepped flag pole area, static, symmetrical and rigid.
Across to another block on the right is an opened block that has an unselfish gesture that catalyzes and synchronizes with neighboring spaces, the Merdeka street, the road spaces, the Merdeka field. It features stadium seating-like, retractable façade that can change according to needs. For instances, long eave configuration to shelter and give shades to spaces underneath, invert ascending configuration to allow for internal seminar and workshop, outwards ascending configuration for the event on site during independent day, soccer match on the field, and combined configuration to allow much creative responses to various event on site in simultaneous manner.
Over the decades, things experienced changes, but only changes in imagery, yet only appearance changed, method and procedure are still the same. What people have decided upon, becomes manifestations of what people may have seen that is appeared and available now, there is pretty much less, or no thinking is done along the process.
